Spadefoot toads stay underground during dry periods, sometimes using the burrows of small mammals for shelter. During aestivation the skin of these toads becomes thick and leathery. They may survive up to 9 months without food, absorbing the fat reserves in their bodies for energy. The toads can sense when the rains begin, and they then burrow back to the surface to mate and lay eggs in pools of rainwater.
